A structural fire in Labasa Town has caused significant disruptions, leaving three families without homes and impacting five businesses operating in a now-dark commercial building. The fire ignited on Tuesday morning in a flat located on the top floor of a double-storey building, and authorities are still investigating its cause.
Ivaan Khan, the property owner, indicated that while the National Fire Authority (NFA) successfully contained the fire, the aftermath has led to a halt in operations at the site. “We have yet to determine what caused the fire,” Khan noted, emphasizing the immediate impact on residents and businesses alike.
With essential services disrupted, one business has already sought temporary relocation to Nacula due to the power outage. “The businesses will be mostly affected by this. We do not know when the power can come back on,” Khan explained. The swift action of the fire brigade has been credited with preventing more extensive damage to the commercial assets. “Thankfully, the firemen arrived on time at the scene. If they didn’t, most of these businesses would have lost everything,” he remarked.
Khan’s family also faces challenges due to the incident, as they plan to stay with relatives in Vunivau until the investigation is completed and services are restored. Despite the unfortunate circumstances, community resilience remains evident as affected families and business owners work together to navigate the aftermath of this disaster.
