The 2025 Extra Battle of the Giants tournament has witnessed an impressive turnout at Subrail Park in Labasa, with a total attendance of 13,023 spectators over three days of pool matches. The tournament kicked off last Friday, drawing crowds of 3,967 on the first day, 4,483 on the second, and culminating with 4,573 fans on the third day, showcasing the community’s strong enthusiasm for football.

Fiji Football Association’s chief executive, Mohammed Yusuf, emphasized the importance of bringing such events to the Northern region, indicating that it allows fans, who often miss out on major matches held in Suva and Lautoka, to enjoy top-level football locally. “This is why we took the tournament,” Yusuf stated, highlighting how the event has engaged Northern sports lovers and reaffirming the need for more significant matches to be hosted in Labasa.

The vibrant atmosphere at Subrail Park was complemented by additional offerings, such as food stalls and a packed beer parlour provided by Extra Supermarket, which enhanced the experience for attendees. The community’s positive response also benefited local vendors, as food stall owners reported strong sales during the tournament.

Looking ahead, the excitement continues as the semi-finals and finals are scheduled for this coming weekend at Subrail Park. The matches promise to further unite the community, maintaining the spirit of sportsmanship and pride that characterizes football in Labasa.

As the tournament progresses, it not only serves as a thrilling sports competition but also a potential catalyst for sports tourism, invigorating the local economy and enhancing community engagement. The successful turnout indicates a hopeful future for Labasa as a key location for major sporting events, reinforcing the importance of local support in promoting such occasions.
