Taxi drivers in Labasa are preparing for significant financial challenges as the Labasa Airport is set to close for essential runway upgrades from February 16 to March 27, which could lead to substantial losses. This closure impacts taxi operators who rely heavily on airport traffic for their livelihoods. Mahen Prasad, president of the Labasa Taxi Association, expressed concern for those drivers particularly dependent on this income source, stating that many could lose hundreds of dollars during the airport’s downtime.

The closure will create difficult circumstances for these drivers, many of whom have families to support. Prasad highlighted the stress that will accompany this sudden loss of income, especially for those facing bills or loan repayments. He stated, “I feel sorry for the drivers who will be affected… Some have loans or bills to pay, and without their usual earnings, it will be very stressful.”

Finding alternative work is expected to be challenging during the airport’s closure, further amplifying the pressure on the local taxi community. As Prasad noted, the economic impact extends beyond the drivers themselves, as the local community relies on these taxi services for transportation.

The temporary closure of the airport is necessary for critical runway pavement strengthening, aimed at ensuring long-term safety, structural integrity, and compliance with international aviation standards. Mesake Nawari, CEO of Fiji Airports, emphasized that these upgrades are vital to addressing structural issues and maintaining compliance with international aviation safety guidelines.

Prasad expressed hope for some form of support or relief to assist the affected drivers through this tough period, recognizing their dedication and hard work. Without assistance, he pointed out that many drivers might struggle to make ends meet until the airport reopens, underscoring the importance of community support during these challenging times. The situation serves as a reminder of the interconnected nature of local economies and the challenges that can arise from infrastructural developments.
