Labasa Taxi Association Challenges Police Over ‘Pirate Taxis’

The Labasa Taxi Association is raising concerns about the effectiveness of the Fiji Police Force, Northern Command Centre, which is connected to Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in Labasa Town. This center also links to CCTV cameras in Savusavu, Seaqaqa, and Nabouwalu.

Mahen Prasad, the association’s chairperson, is urging the use of the CCTV footage to help identify illegal taxis, commonly referred to as ‘pirate taxis,’ that operate in Labasa. These illegal taxis are private vehicles that unlawfully transport passengers while charging fares similar to registered taxis.

The association’s concerns were amplified following a recent incident where Labasa taxi driver Aiyaz Din Mohammed, 31, was allegedly assaulted by a driver of a private vehicle.

Prasad stated, “When we complain or the police learn that a certain driver is making a complaint, there is a risk of threats and physical abuse.” He also criticized the police for not apprehending owners of vehicles reportedly involved in illegal taxi operations.

“We have provided the police with a list of vehicles operating as pirate taxis, but they have yet to respond and take action against these offenders,” he said.

The Divisional Police Commander (DPC) North, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, acknowledged the ongoing threats faced by taxi drivers.
