The Labasa Taxi Association has raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of the Fiji Police Force’s Northern Command Centre, particularly its connection to the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras installed throughout Labasa Town. These cameras also monitor areas in Savusavu, Seaqaqa, and Nabouwalu.
Association chairperson Mahen Prasad has urged authorities to utilize the CCTV footage to identify illegal taxis, often referred to as “pirate taxis,” that are operating in Labasa. These unauthorized taxis are private vehicles that transport passengers and charge fares akin to registered taxis.
The association’s concerns have been heightened following the reported assault of a Labasa taxi driver, Aiyaz Din Mohammed, who was allegedly attacked by a driver of a private vehicle. Prasad expressed that taxi drivers face threats and possible physical abuse when they lodge complaints against illegal operators.
He criticized the police for their inaction regarding the apprehension of those involved in illegal taxi operations, stating, “We’ve provided them with a list of vehicles suspected to be operating as pirate taxis, yet the police have not taken any steps to address the situation.”
Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the North, acknowledged the ongoing threats faced by taxi drivers in the area.
