The crushing season at the Labasa Sugar Mill concluded on Monday, marking the end of its operational activities for this year. However, unlike in previous years, there was no formal ceremony or announcement to commemorate the closure or to provide details on the total quantity of sugar cane processed. A representative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation indicated that a press release detailing the total cane tonnage processed at all three mills will be issued later in the week.
Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, noted that the Labasa mill had outperformed its counterparts in the Western Division. Initially, the mill was projected to crush 547,000 tonnes of cane, a target which it successfully surpassed. He further highlighted that the mill’s performance exceeded that of the previous year, showcasing an improvement in operational efficiency.
The minister mentioned that more comprehensive data on the crushing figures would be made available soon.
In summary, while the closure of the Labasa Sugar Mill did not feature a traditional farewell event, the mill’s performance indicates a positive trend in sugar production. This improvement could bode well for the local economy and the agricultural community as they look forward to next season’s potential. There’s hope that this successful crushing season will set a precedent for higher production levels in the future, benefiting both farmers and the sugar industry at large.
