Labasa Stuns Suva with Dramatic Comeback in IDC Opener

Labasa overcame an early deficit to defeat Suva 3-1 in an exciting opener of the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) Group A at Churchill Park in Lautoka today.

Both teams displayed impressive performances, but it was Suva that struck first. Defender Joeli Ranitu scored the opening goal in the 41st minute, heading in a corner from Joe Moses and leaving Labasa goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau and his defense in shock.

Just before halftime, Labasa managed to equalize when Bruce Hughes fouled Lekima Gonerau in the penalty box. Christopher Wasasala converted the penalty, bringing the teams level as they headed into the break.

In the second half, Labasa took the lead with a powerful shot from veteran Taniela Waqa in the 51st minute following a strong buildup in midfield.

In response, Suva Coach Babs Khan introduced Solomon Islanders Gagame Feni and Jaygrey Sipikana to strengthen their offensive play. However, it was Labasa that sealed the victory in the 87th minute when striker Fordney Junior scored a remarkable goal during a counter-attack.
