A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for the repeated rape and abuse of his 15-year-old stepdaughter in Labasa. The conviction followed a disturbing series of events that began in 2020 and continued until 2023, culminating in the victim becoming pregnant. The lengthy sentence was announced on October 9, with a non-parole period of 15 years set by Justice Lee James Burney.
In a powerful victim impact statement, the girl expressed her feelings of betrayal and devastation, reflecting on the trust she had placed in her stepfather. “I saw you as a real father, not a stepfather. You ruined my life, my dreams, and the things I wanted to achieve in life,” she wrote, emphasizing the emotional toll the abuse has had on her.
Court records reveal that the abuse began when the victim was in Class 6, escalating as her mother was often away selling produce, leaving the girl vulnerable to his attacks. The situation came to light when the victim became pregnant, leading to the father’s denial of paternity and attempts to vilify her.
Justice Burney described the man’s actions as a “gross breach of trust,” highlighting the importance of acknowledging the long-lasting harm inflicted upon the victim. He urged the offender to utilize his time in custody to engage in rehabilitation programs, an approach that reflects a broader commitment to addressing the root causes of such criminal behavior.
This case not only sheds light on the horrendous abuse of minors within their own homes but also reinforces society’s urgent need to protect vulnerable individuals. The decision by the court to impose a lengthy sentence serves as a message that such abuses will not be tolerated and reflects a commitment to justice for victims. As communities grapple with the implications of such crimes, the hope remains that the judicial system will continue to strengthen its stance against the sexual abuse of children, fostering a safer environment for all.
