Labasa Shines with Semifinal-Bound Victory in FMF Championship Showdown!

Labasa secured a 2-1 victory over the host team Lautoka in an exciting Group A match of the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship at Churchill Park. With this win, Labasa has advanced to the semifinals.

Coached by Ravneel Pratap, Labasa showcased their strong form following a previous 3-1 victory against Suva. The team made notable changes to the starting lineup, introducing Anish Khem and Akeimi Ralulu.

Christopher Wasasala, a seasoned striker, scored both of Labasa’s goals in the first half. He capitalized on a defensive mistake in the 16th minute, striking the ball past goalkeeper Beniamino Mateinaqara. Wasasala doubled the lead with a spectacular goal in the 43rd minute, as Labasa went into halftime ahead 2-0.

Lautoka responded quickly in the second half, with Saula Waqa scoring in the 49th minute to reduce the deficit. His strike left Labasa’s veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau with no chance to save.

However, Wasasala received a second yellow card, forcing him to leave the game early, which put additional pressure on Labasa as Lautoka sought to capitalize on the situation. Despite continual threats from Waqa and Sairusi Nalaubu, solid defensive efforts from Netani Suluka, Sekove Naivakananumi, and Lekima Gonerau helped Labasa maintain their lead until the final whistle.

Looking ahead, Labasa will face Navua in their final group match at 4 PM tomorrow, while Lautoka will meet Suva in the last match of Day 3 at 8 PM.
