The business community in Labasa is rallying to support the hosting of next year’s Battle of the Giants tournament, organized by the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA), at Subrail Park. This announcement was confirmed by Fiji FA chief executive Mohammed Yusuf, who shared the exciting news with SUNsports.
Paul Jaduram, president of the Macuata Tourism Association, expressed his appreciation for the decision, highlighting the trust that Fiji FA has in the Labasa Town Council for managing the tournament. Jaduram emphasized the positive economic impact the tournament is expected to bring to the town, noting that Labasa holds significant potential for sports tourism, which can be fully realized through collaboration among local businesses.
Jaduram pointed out that Labasa is well-equipped with ample hotel accommodations to welcome visitors from Viti Levu, enriching the experience for both tourists and locals alike.
On the football front, Labasa’s men’s coach, Ravneel Pratap, is optimistic about the opportunity to reclaim the title they lost this year. The team previously secured the B.O.G title in 2023, and Pratap believes that with adequate improvements to the playing field, spectators will witness high-caliber football.
Reflecting on past experiences, Labasa successfully hosted the Digicel Fiji FACT tournament earlier this year, which attracted a large number of fans. Pratap remarked that hosting at home comes with its challenges, but the thrill of playing in front of local supporters is always motivating.
In preparation for upcoming tournaments, the Labasa Town Council has invested over $40,000 in new floodlights, enhancing the facilities at Subrail Park.
The enthusiasm of the Labasa community and their commitment to hosting the Battle of the Giants presents an exciting opportunity for both the local economy and football fans. The collaboration between businesses, the football community, and local authorities shows a promising pathway for growth and development in sports tourism.
Overall, this initiative not only highlights the strong spirit of community support but also sets the stage for Labasa to showcase its potential as a hub for sporting events, bringing hope for a vibrant future in local football and tourism.
