Labasa triumphed over host Lautoka with a score of 2-1 in an exhilarating Group A match of the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship held at Churchill Park. This victory secured Labasa a place in the semifinals.
Under the guidance of coach Ravneel Pratap, Labasa followed up on their 3-1 victory over Suva the previous day with a strong performance against Lautoka, making notable changes to the starting lineup by including Anish Khem and Akeimi Ralulu.
Christopher Wasasala, a seasoned striker, was instrumental in Labasa’s success, scoring both goals in the first half. He capitalized on a defensive error to score in the 16th minute, sending the ball past goalkeeper Beniamino Mateinaqara. Wasasala doubled the lead just before halftime, finding the top corner of the net in the 43rd minute, giving Labasa a comfortable 2-0 advantage at the break.
Lautoka responded quickly after halftime, with Saula Waqa scoring in the 49th minute with a striking shot that left veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau with no chance. However, Wasasala received a second yellow card and was sent off, which created additional pressure on Labasa as Lautoka aimed to capitalize on their numerical advantage.
Despite strong efforts from Waqa and Sairusi Nalaubu, Labasa’s defense, led by Netani Suluka, Sekove Naivakananumi, and Lekima Gonerau, held firm, preventing further goals and securing the win until the final whistle.
Labasa, supported by Extra Supermarket, is set to face Navua in their last group match tomorrow at 4 PM, while Lautoka will play against Suva in the final match of Day 3 at 8 PM.
