Labasa has ascended to the top of the Extra Premier League standings after a commanding 4-1 win against Lautoka in their Round 3 match at Churchill Park. The Babasiga Lions demonstrated their prowess on the field, thanks in large part to the exceptional performance of Jimson Abana, a prominent player from the Solomon Islands, who netted two goals in the match.
Lautoka made a strong start, with Saula Waqa scoring in the fourth minute, capitalizing on a well-executed play orchestrated by Sitiveni Cavuilagi. However, Labasa quickly retaliated; just seven minutes later, Abana was fouled in the box by Lautoka defender Ilimotama Jese, earning and converting a penalty to level the score.
Abana showcased his dynamic play shortly after equalizing, taking advantage of defensive errors from Lautoka to score again, bringing Labasa ahead 2-1 before halftime. Lautoka’s situation worsened when Waqa received a direct red card, leaving the team a man down for the second half.
Labasa’s superior fitness became evident in the latter stages of the match. They capitalized on Lautoka’s fatigue, adding two more goals through Rusiate Doidoi and Jone Lalagavesi, sealing a decisive victory. With this win, Labasa now sits atop the league table with 7 points from three matches, while Lautoka is struggling at the bottom with two losses.
This victory builds on Labasa’s prior dominant performance, including a stunning 6-0 demolition of Tavua, where Abana also stole the spotlight by scoring a hat trick. Coach Alvin Chand has praised his team’s growth and resilience, indicating a promising future for Labasa as they progress through the league.
The results signify Labasa’s upward momentum, instilling hope among fans and supporters for continued success in the season ahead. With a blend of skillful players and effective coaching, the Babasiga Lions are emerging as formidable contenders in the league.
