The business sector in Labasa has expressed strong support for the upcoming Battle of the Giants tournament, which is sanctioned by the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) and will take place next year at Subrail Park. This announcement was made following the confirmation from Fiji FA chief executive Mohammed Yusuf regarding Labasa hosting the event.
Paul Jaduram, president of the Macuata Tourism Association, welcomed the decision and praised Fiji FA for trusting the Labasa Town Council with the organization of the tournament. Jaduram emphasized that hosting the B.O.G tournament can foster significant economic activity in the area. He noted that Labasa possesses considerable sports tourism potential, which hinges on the collaboration of the entire business community.
Labasa is well-equipped to accommodate visitors from Viti Levu, as it offers a range of hotel options. Meanwhile, Labasa’s football men’s coach, Ravneel Pratap, sees this event as an excellent opportunity to reclaim the B.O.G title that was lost this year, having previously won it in 2023. Pratap called for the council to enhance the ground’s facilities to ensure that the tournament displays quality football.
In preparation for similar events, the Labasa Town Council invested over $40,000 in new floodlights, showcasing their commitment to improving local sports infrastructure. Following the successful hosting of the Digicel Fiji FACT earlier this year, which attracted a large crowd, Pratap noted that the local football community is excited about the upcoming tournament. He acknowledged the pressure of competing as hosts but expressed enthusiasm over the prospect of playing in front of home fans.
This tournament represents not just an athletic endeavor, but also a chance for Labasa to showcase its community spirit and hospitality, potentially boosting local businesses and enhancing the region’s reputation for sports tourism.
In summary, Labasa’s commitment to hosting the Battle of the Giants tournament is a promising development, highlighting the intersection of sports and economic growth in the region. With community support and the right preparations, the event can become a significant milestone for Labasa, both on and off the field.
