Labasa is gearing up for the forthcoming Extra Battle of the Giants tournament, a highly anticipated event featuring fierce competition among top teams, including Ba, Lautoka, and Nadroga. This year’s tournament, dubbed the “group of death,” will commence on August 1 at Subrail Park, marking its return to Labasa for the first time since 2002.
Despite suffering a recent defeat to Lautoka with a score of 1-4, Labasa aims to leverage the local home advantage to recover and perform well in the tournament. Fiji FA CEO Mohammed Yusuf expressed optimism about the event, anticipating thrilling matches due to the tight competition between the teams.
The local community is rallying around this event, which is expected to stimulate economic activity and enhance Labasa as a sports tourism destination. Paul Jaduram, president of the Macuata Tourism Association, noted that the tournament could significantly boost business opportunities and attract visitors to the area.
Earlier this year, Labasa successfully hosted the Digicel Fiji FACT tournament, which drew a large crowd and showcased the community’s enthusiasm for football. Echoing this sentiment, Labasa’s coach, Ravneel Pratap, sees the upcoming tournament as a crucial chance for the team to reclaim their title after previously winning it in 2023.
The excitement surrounding the tournament not only highlights the community’s dedication to sports but also sets the stage for a successful event that benefits both local pride and economic growth through sports tourism. The collaboration among local businesses, sports organizations, and the community reflects a bright future for sports in Labasa, bringing together teams and fans in celebration of football.
