Police in Labasa have made a series of arrests related to the possession of illicit drugs at the municipal market starting from January 1. According to Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent of Police (SP) Eroni Soqosoqo, these arrests serve as a stern warning to those involved in the drug trade.
Among those arrested is a 35-year-old farmer from Kilikoso, who was discovered with nine sachets of what is believed to be marijuana. A 42-year-old unemployed man from Qelewaqa was also apprehended at the Labasa Market Taxi Stand for possessing similar substances. Moreover, police took into custody another individual, a 40-year-old from Qelewaqa, who was found with 11 sachets of suspected marijuana at the Labasa Bus Stand. Additionally, a chef from Valebasogo was arrested on January 2 for having four sachets of the same substance.
In a further effort to combat drug-related issues, law enforcement officials in Tukavesi, Cakaudrove, seized containers holding 334 green plants, presumed to be marijuana.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu indicated that drug-related arrests occur daily and expressed gratitude to community leaders for providing timely information that aids in these efforts.
The Labasa Market Vendors and Farmers Association’s vice-president, Waisea Makulau, praised the police’s crackdown on illegal drug activities, highlighting the importance of maintaining a safe market environment free from illicit businesses.
