The crushing season at the Labasa Sugar Mill officially concluded on Monday, but the closure was marked without the usual formalities or announcements regarding the total sugarcane processed. Traditionally, the end of the season includes a program celebrating the achievement, but this year, the practice was not followed.
A representative from the Fiji Sugar Corporation indicated that there would be a press release later in the week to provide specific details about the total cane tonnage processed across the company’s three mills. Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, noted that the Labasa mill had outperformed the two other mills located in the Western Division. He reported that the initial expectation for cane crushing was set at 547,000 tonnes, and the Labasa mill not only met this target but exceeded it, demonstrating an improvement compared to the previous year.
Minister Singh assured that more detailed data concerning the crushing figures would be shared later this week.
This year’s successful outcome at the Labasa Sugar Mill is a positive sign for the sugar industry, showcasing resilience and progress despite the challenges faced in prior seasons. As further information is released, it will be interesting to see how these results contribute to the overall growth and sustainability of Fiji’s sugar industry.
