Labasa Market Vendors Demand More Police Action Amid Rising Drug Sales

Vendors at Labasa market are urging authorities to increase police patrols due to a rise in drug dealers in the area. Waisea Makulau, the interim president of the Labasa Market Association, reported that at least 20 young men are seen selling drugs daily at the market.

Makulau noted, “Previously, there were only a few dealers, but now we are observing a significant rise. I have witnessed these young individuals selling drugs right in front of me.”

To tackle this problem, the association is actively submitting complaints to the police. He also emphasized the need for more surveillance cameras to enhance security at the market.

In response, Senior Superintendent Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander, stated that their efforts to combat drugs extend beyond the market area. He mentioned that since August, police have made four arrests at the market, indicating an escalation in police activity.

Baledrokadroka remarked, “There have been 24 cases of unlawful possession in the greater Labasa area, including in town, Subrail Park, the bus stand, and near the Labasa tramline. These arrests were the result of both patrols and tips from the public.”

He expressed gratitude for the consistent information sharing from the community, reinforcing the importance of public cooperation in the fight against drugs.
