The ongoing battle against drug peddling in Labasa’s market and surrounding areas continues to be a significant challenge for local authorities. Special Administrator Samuela Ligairi has highlighted that the market and bus stand are vulnerable hotspots for illegal drug activities. Despite the enhanced surveillance through operational CCTV cameras and diligent police cooperation resulting in some arrests, vendors express ongoing concerns about open drug selling within the market.

Ligairi emphasizes the collaborative approach taken by forming a crime committee that includes vendors and police officers. This partnership aims to foster a crime-free zone within the market. He mentions the potential for a Memorandum of Understanding with the police and the council, aiming to implement laws that protect vendors and the entire Labasa Township.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu underscores that the fight against drug trafficking is a collective responsibility. He reassures the public that eliminating drug issues is possible through united effort, encouraging community members to report any suspicious activities.

Meanwhile, efforts to dismantle marijuana farms continue with police operations in the Northern Division, reflecting the authorities’ proactive measures to curb drug trafficking.

The dedicated actions of law enforcement, coupled with community support, hold promise for creating a safer environment in Labasa. By maintaining vigilance and fostering cooperation between the police and the community, there is hope for a significant reduction in drug-related incidents, contributing to a drug-free, secure atmosphere for residents and visitors alike. Such initiatives underscore the importance of communal engagement in tackling social issues, paving the way for a healthier community.
