Labasa Market is increasingly recognized as a hotspot for drug sales, as reported by Waisea Makulau, the interim president of the market association. Makulau mentioned that some dealers have been operating in the market for several years, often choosing locations that are not covered by surveillance cameras.
Despite multiple complaints over the years, he expressed frustration at the lack of significant action from authorities. A committee involving relevant officials had been established, but they have not convened recently. The last meeting included discussions on the ongoing drug issue.
Makulau noted that the installation of surveillance cameras has not deterred dealers from continuing their illicit activities and questioned why the problem remains unresolved.
In response, Samuela Ligairi, the town’s special administrator, acknowledged a recent meeting with senior police officers regarding the matter. He confirmed that they are focusing on enhancing policing within the town to combat the issue. Ligairi reassured that any drug activity at the market would be reported and that existing cameras could provide evidence. He also mentioned that dealers are now reportedly conducting their operations outside the market area.
