Labasa Market: A Drug Hotspot Despite Surveillance Efforts

Labasa Market has become a notorious site for drug sales, according to Waisea Makulau, interim president of the market association. He stated that some dealers have been operating in the area for years, typically selling drugs in locations where surveillance cameras cannot monitor their activities.

Makulau expressed concerns about the lack of progress by authorities in tackling this ongoing issue, despite numerous complaints made over the years. He mentioned that a committee was established with relevant authorities to discuss the matter, but they have not convened recently. During their last meeting, the crime committee addressed the drug sales issue.

He noted that the installation of surveillance cameras has not been effective in deterring dealers from engaging in illegal activities. “I do not know what the problem is because the issue has yet to be resolved,” he said.

In response, Samuela Ligairi, the town’s special administrator, indicated that he recently met with senior police officers to discuss the matter. He acknowledged the complaints and mentioned that they talked about enhancing police operations in the town to address the problem. Ligairi affirmed that they are collaborating with authorities to tackle the drug issue. He added, “If anyone is selling drugs at the market, it will be reported. We have cameras around and it can be evidence.” Furthermore, he noted that dealers are now reportedly conducting their business outside the market.
