Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu has not yet provided a specific date for the reopening of the children’s ward at Labasa Hospital. The ward has been closed for over a year to undergo significant renovations, which notably include essential electrical upgrades. During this period, pediatric patients have been temporarily relocated to another ward within the hospital.

Dr. Atonio emphasized that renovations are progressing, and once completed, the hospital will receive a certificate of compliance, followed by an official handover of the ward. While earlier this year, Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa had expressed hope that the ward would reopen by March, the current timeline remains unspecified.

The ongoing renovation reflects a broader commitment by the Fijian government to improve healthcare infrastructure, especially for children and vulnerable populations. Similar enhancements are also being observed in other healthcare facilities across Fiji, such as the ongoing improvements at St Giles Psychiatric Hospital and the recent renovation projects at various health centers.

Such infrastructure investments signify a hopeful step towards better healthcare services, contributing to an overall improvement in patient care and public health outcomes in the community. The proactive measures taken in upgrading these facilities not only serve immediate needs but also lay the groundwork for a more resilient healthcare system in the future.
