The business sector in Labasa has expressed strong support for hosting the upcoming Rooster Chicken/Scoop Ice Cream Fiji Football Association’s sanctioned Battle of the Giants tournament at Subrail Park next year. Fiji FA chief executive Mohammed Yusuf recently confirmed that Labasa will be the official venue for the tournament, much to the delight of local stakeholders.
Paul Jaduram, president of the Macuata Tourism Association, welcomed the announcement and praised the Fiji FA for its confidence in Labasa Town Council to manage the event. He highlighted the tournament’s potential to boost economic activity within the town, emphasizing the area’s substantial capacity for sports tourism, contingent upon collaboration among local businesses.
With ample hotel accommodations available, Jaduram noted that Labasa is well-equipped to host visitors from Viti Levu. Ravneel Pratap, the coach of Labasa’s men’s football team, expressed optimism about the tournament, viewing it as a chance for the team to reclaim the title they lost this year. Labasa previously secured the B.O.G title in 2023.
Pratap also urged the council to ensure the playing ground is upgraded to meet high standards, which is crucial for showcasing quality football. He remembered the massive attendance during the Digicel Fiji FACT tournament earlier this year, expressing confidence that the local football community would welcome this exciting news.
While acknowledging the pressures of performing at home, Pratap noted that the thrill of competing on familiar turf adds to the excitement of the tournament. In preparation for previous events like the Fiji FACT, the Labasa Town Council had invested over $40,000 in new floodlights to enhance the venue’s capabilities.
This announcement not only promises an invigorating sporting event but also presents a valuable opportunity for economic growth in Labasa, fostering community spirit and collaboration among local businesses.
Overall, the upcoming tournament underscores Labasa’s potential as a vibrant hub for sports tourism and community engagement, paving the way for future events and developments in the region.
