The business sector in Labasa has united to support the upcoming Battle of the Giants tournament, which is sanctioned by the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) and set to take place at Subrail Park next year. This announcement comes after Fiji FA’s Chief Executive, Mohammed Yusuf, confirmed Labasa as the host for the event.

Paul Jaduram, the president of the Macuata Tourism Association, expressed his enthusiasm for the decision and praised Fiji FA for their confidence in the Labasa Town Council to organize the tournament. Jaduram noted that the event would significantly boost the local economy, highlighting Labasa’s untapped potential in sports tourism. He emphasized that an active partnership among the business community is crucial for maximizing this opportunity.

With an abundance of hotel accommodations available, Jaduram stated that Labasa is well-prepared to welcome visitors from Viti Levu. Meanwhile, Labasa’s men’s football coach, Ravneel Pratap, views this tournament as a chance for the team to reclaim their title, which they lost this year despite winning the B.O.G title in 2023.

Pratap stressed the importance of elevating the quality of the playing ground to ensure high-caliber football can be showcased. Reflecting on the success of the earlier Digicel Fiji FACT tournament hosted by Labasa, which attracted a large audience, he noted that the football community in the North would warmly welcome the announcement. He acknowledged the pressure to perform well at home but expressed excitement about the prospect of winning.

In light of their preparations for the Fiji FACT, the Labasa Town Council has also invested in new floodlights, totaling over $40,000, to enhance the facility.

This upcoming tournament represents not just a sporting event but also a significant opportunity for Labasa to shine on multiple fronts. The collaboration between local businesses and stakeholders reflects a hopeful vision for economic growth, community engagement, and the promotion of sports tourism, showcasing Labasa as a vibrant destination for both athletes and visitors.
