The Labasa fish market has been identified as a high-risk area for pedestrians, according to Amit Deo, the asset manager for the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA). Situated before the Labasa bridge, the market deals with significant foot traffic and heavy vehicle movement, which presents safety concerns for visitors.
Deo indicated that the FRA is interested in discussing this issue with the Labasa Town Council leadership. He mentioned that recent public consultations regarding taxi permits highlighted the need for a pedestrian crossing in front of the fish market, an issue that should be addressed by the Land Transport Authority, which organized the consultations.
In response to the safety concerns, Labasa Town Council chairperson Paul Jaduram announced that a three-acre parcel of land has been secured at the Naiyaca subdivision for relocating the fish market. The new site will be positioned behind Extra Supermarket and will be situated across the river.
