Labasa Fish Market: A Dangerous Spot for Pedestrians

The Labasa fish market has been identified as a high-risk area for pedestrians, according to Amit Deo, the asset manager for the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA). Located just before the Labasa bridge, the market sees a significant amount of foot traffic alongside heavy vehicle movement, which elevates safety concerns for those walking in the area.

Deo expressed a desire to engage with the Labasa Town Council to address these safety issues. He noted that the market’s current placement is temporary, a revelation that follows requests for a pedestrian crossing in front of the market during public consultations regarding taxi permits.

In response, Paul Jaduram, the chairperson of the council, stated that a three-acre plot has been secured at the Naiyaca subdivision for the relocation of the fish market. This new site will be located across the river, behind Extra Supermarket, which could alleviate the safety risks currently faced by pedestrians.

This development is a positive step towards improving pedestrian safety and accessibility in Labasa. The planned relocation of the fish market not only aims to mitigate dangerous conditions but will also likely enhance the overall experience for both vendors and customers. Stakeholders are encouraged to continue advocating for improved infrastructure to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
