Labasa Fish Market: A Dangerous Crossing for Pedestrians?

Spread the love

The current site of the Labasa fish market has been identified as a hazardous area for pedestrians due to the significant foot traffic and heavy vehicle activity, as highlighted by Amit Deo, the asset manager North for the Fiji Roads Authority. Situated before the Labasa bridge, the market poses risks for individuals navigating the busy vicinity.

Mr. Deo expressed the intent of the FRA to engage with Labasa Town Council’s executives to discuss this pressing issue further. He noted that the market’s location is temporary, a fact that emerged during public consultations regarding taxi permit reviews, where a proposal for a pedestrian crossing was raised.

In light of these discussions, council chairperson Paul Jaduram confirmed that a three-acre site at the Naiyaca subdivision has been secured for the future development of a new fish market. This location will be situated across the river, behind Extra Supermarket, marking a proactive step toward improving pedestrian safety in the area.

This initiative reflects a positive movement toward enhancing public safety and accessibility. The forthcoming relocation of the fish market promises not only to address the current risks but also to foster a more organized and pedestrian-friendly environment in Labasa.

In summary, the decision to secure a new site for the fish market is a hopeful development that underscores the commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
