Labasa FC’s veteran goalkeeper, Simione Tamanisau, received the BiC Fiji FACT Golden Glove award following the Babasiga Lions’ thrilling victory in the tournament. At 43 years old, Tamanisau displayed remarkable skill and leadership throughout the competition, playing a pivotal role in guiding Labasa to the championship.
In the final, Labasa faced Rewa in a tense match that ended in a 1-1 draw after normal and extra time. Tamanisau’s key moment came when he successfully saved a penalty kick from Rewa’s Epeli Valevou, which proved crucial in the subsequent penalty shootout, where Labasa triumphed 4-2.
Commenting on the win, Tamanisau praised his teammates for their determination, particularly under challenging circumstances when they played with ten men after a red card. “The credit must go to the boys, from the first whistle to the final whistle. Even though we were a man down, I must thank them for taking a leap, and the win is just sweet,” he reflected.
Labasa’s Rusiate Doidoi was also honored with the Golden Ball award for his impactful presence throughout the tournament, consistently contributing to the team’s attacking play.
This title marks Labasa’s first Fiji FACT championship since 2015, underscoring their growth and resilience as a team. Coach Alvin Chand credited the victory to the players’ dedication and the unwavering support of fans, emphasizing the community spirit that fuels their ambition.
Overall, Labasa’s performance throughout the tournament highlights not only their skill but also the importance of teamwork and perseverance, inspiring both their supporters and future generations in Fijian football. With this significant victory, Labasa aims to continue building on their success in the coming matches, fostering a hopeful outlook for the future of their club and community.
