The High Court in Labasa has imposed a 12-year prison sentence on a man convicted of raping and assaulting a 21-year-old woman in Savusavu. Justice Lee Burney emphasized the importance of denouncing sexual violence and safeguarding vulnerable women during the sentencing, which took place on January 8, 2026, following a trial that concluded on November 28, 2025.
The incident occurred in the early hours of June 2, 2023, when the victim was waiting for a bus to the Taveuni ferry. While she was in a secluded area near the taxi stand, the accused confronted her, questioned her integrity, and violently punched her in the face, rendering her unconscious. Upon regaining consciousness, the victim was sexually assaulted by the offender.
Justice Burney condemned the attack, stating, “You attacked and raped a vulnerable young woman in a public place in the dead of night.” He noted the profound trauma the violent encounter would have inflicted on the victim. His main objective was to ensure the sentencing reflected the court’s and societal condemnation of such crimes, serving as a deterrent to potential offenders.
The judge determined a base sentence of seven years, which was elevated to 12 years due to the presence of several aggravating factors. A non-parole period of seven years and nine months was also established, considering the time the offender had already served in custody.
This ruling demonstrates a strong judicial stance against sexual violence and highlights the commitment to protecting the rights and safety of women in the community.
