The Labasa Town Council has firmly refuted statements made by Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry, who labeled the conditions of the Labasa main market as unsatisfactory. Samuela Ligairi, the Council’s Special Administrator, clarified that significant repairs and upgrades to the market facilities have been undertaken as part of the government’s ongoing initiatives focused on town infrastructure enhancement.

Ligairi remarked on the Council’s commitment to improving the market environment by working closely with vendors to address their concerns on an individual basis. He mentioned that further upgrades to both the market and surrounding infrastructure are planned, including the establishment of a food market and a carrier stand.

Chaudhry had previously criticized the state of the market, expressing concerns about public health and safety, suggesting that the current conditions fail to meet necessary standards. In response, long-time vendor Amra Wati dismissed these criticisms as politically driven, occurring in light of the approaching elections.

In light of past issues raised, including drainage problems and the lack of adequate facilities that have particularly affected female vendors, the Labasa Town Council is taking affirmative action. These efforts resonate with similar initiatives underway at the Labasa Fish Market, where ongoing maintenance aims to address longstanding grievances raised by vendors about working conditions.

The town’s ongoing focus on infrastructure improvements shows a promising direction toward revitalizing local markets, ensuring better working environments, and enhancing overall community engagement. This proactive stance by the Labasa Town Council may uplift both vendors and patrons alike, fostering a vibrant marketplace and encouraging economic growth in the region.
