Labasa triumphed over Navua with a 5-3 victory in the penalty shootout to secure the 2024 FMF Inter District Championship at Churchill Park in Lautoka. Star striker Christopher Wasasala successfully converted the final penalty for the Babasiga Lions, clinching the prestigious title.
The match began with a high tempo, as both teams launched swift attacks. Labasa’s frontline, featuring Wasasala, Tigi Molea, and Fordney Junior, posed a continuous threat, while Navua’s Thomas Dunn, Simione Damuni, and the speedy Usaia Tilivarua kept the pressure on their opponents. Goalkeepers Simione Tamanisau and Jovilisi Borisi were forced into action with crucial saves throughout the match.
Despite a lively first half, neither team managed to find the back of the net, prompting coaches Ravneel Pratap and Saiyad Ali to make tactical adjustments at halftime. Labasa substituted Molea for Ilisoni Loloivalu, while Navua replaced Solomon Islander Jackson Wale with Sunny Deol.
As the second half progressed, the intensity on the field led to rising tempers, resulting in the sending off of Labasa’s Akeimi Ralulu and Navua’s Domoni, leaving both teams with ten players. In the 79th minute, Dunn nearly broke the deadlock but was thwarted by Labasa’s replacement defender Sitiveni Rakai. Shortly after, Wasasala had a chance to score but failed to deliver a powerful shot.
The game remained scoreless at the end of regulation time, necessitating extra time and eventually a penalty shootout to determine the winner. In the shootout, Labasa’s Anish Khem, Sekove Naivakananumi, Rusiate Doidoi, Lekima Gonerau, and Wasasala all converted their penalties. Navua’s Vineet Chand, brought in specifically for the shootout, missed his attempt, while Ali Mekawir, Filipe Baravilala, and Jared Rongosulia scored for Navua.
Labasa received a cash prize of $25,000, medals, and the winner’s trophy, while Navua was awarded $6,000 for their efforts in reaching the final. The match showcased the skill and determination of both teams, culminating in a thrilling conclusion to the tournament.
