The Labasa bypass road project has been emphasized as a crucial priority, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka urging for its immediate commencement. During recent discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Mr. Rabuka highlighted the necessity of the bypass to promote effective dual road access to Labasa Town, citing the current one-way road configuration as inadequate for handling the existing traffic flow.
Notably, the Prime Minister recalled an instance where fire crews faced delays due to restricted road access during a fire incident in Labasa Town. He suggested transforming the old rail bridge located next to the main bridge into a two-way road network to improve traffic conditions.
Concerns regarding the slow progress of the bypass project have been raised by various stakeholders, particularly public transport providers who have expressed frustration over the worsening traffic congestion and delays in service delivery. Sujit Sharma, the general secretary of the Labasa Town Taxi Association, reiterated the urgent need for the bypass, pointing out that excessive vehicles during peak hours exacerbate the situation and negatively impact business operations as well.
In a public consultation held last October, FRA assets manager Amit Deo acknowledged that the project is currently in the management discussion phase, while highlighting its complexity and estimated cost of $30 million. He emphasized that the realization of the project will require time and effort.
Despite these challenges, discussions between the town council and the government continue, with stakeholders eagerly awaiting real progress.
