Labasa Bypass Road: A Traffic Solution in Limbo?

Spread the love

The Labasa bypass road project is of significant importance, as Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has underscored the necessity for its immediate commencement. During discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Mr. Rabuka emphasized the urgent requirement for dual road access to Labasa Town, highlighting the inadequacy of the current one-way road network to manage traffic flow efficiently.

He recalled an incident when fire crews faced delays due to limited access during a fire in Labasa Town, prompting him to advocate for transforming the old rail bridge next to the main bridge into a two-way road to enhance connectivity.

Concerns from various stakeholders regarding the stagnant progress of the bypass project have been vocal. Public transport providers, in particular, expressed frustration over ongoing traffic congestion and service delays. Sujit Sharma, general secretary of the Labasa Town Taxi Association, stressed the need for the bypass, noting that excessive vehicles during peak periods significantly worsen traffic and negatively impact taxi services and local businesses.

Amid these challenges, FRA’s assets manager, Amit Deo, reported at a public consultation last October that the project remains in the management discussion phase. With an estimated cost of $30 million, the bypass is a complex project that will take time to materialize. Mr. Deo remarked on the difficulties involved, stating that there are no quick solutions to this undertaking.

Looking ahead, there is hope and eagerness for substantial progress as discussions between the town council and the government continue. With vehicle numbers on the rise and ongoing development in Labasa, the bypass road is viewed as essential for both reducing congestion and facilitating growth within the community.

This hopeful outlook reflects a commitment to improving infrastructure and ensuring that Labasa can accommodate future increases in both traffic and development. As stakeholders push for action, the project represents a vital step towards enhancing mobility and supporting economic activities in the region.
