The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, has reported significant momentum in the planning of the Labasa Bypass Road, a project designed to alleviate the heavy traffic congestions in Labasa Town. The envisioned route will trace the tram line corridor from James Martin Street to the Pacific Service Station, permitting two-way traffic and accommodating heavy vehicles.

Singh emphasized the necessity for stakeholders to voice their concerns and submit relevant documents to the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), which is tasked with overseeing the project. With the design and planning phases already in progress, authorities are optimistic about tangible advances beginning by mid-2025, with construction anticipated to start before the year concludes.

“This new bypass road covers a distance from James Ward Street to the Grand Eastern Hotel’s entrance and is engineered for two-way traffic,” noted Singh, highlighting that the road width will also accommodate heavy trucks.

The ongoing dialogue concerning the bypass project echoes sentiments voiced by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who previously underscored the urgent need for the project and the inadequacy of the current one-way system, especially during peak traffic times. Public transportation operators have previously expressed frustrations about congestion, underlining the importance of initiating the bypass road development swiftly.

As stakeholders collaborate on this vital infrastructure project, there remains a hopeful outlook for improved transportation efficiency, benefiting both local residents and businesses significantly. The commitment to improving the town’s infrastructure underscores a positive step towards addressing the pressing traffic and connectivity challenges the community faces.
