The Labasa bypass road project is a top priority for the government, according to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who is calling for immediate action to begin construction. He emphasized the need for dual road access to Labasa Town during his discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), highlighting that the current one-way road system is inadequate for handling the heavy traffic flow.
Mr. Rabuka recounted a recent incident where a fire crew faced delays due to limited road access, underscoring the critical nature of developing an alternative route. He proposed turning the old rail bridge near the main bridge into a two-way road network to help alleviate congestion.
Concerns have been raised by various stakeholders regarding the slow progress of the bypass project. Public transport providers, particularly from the Labasa Town Taxi Association, have expressed their frustration over traffic congestion, which has severely impacted their ability to provide service. General Secretary Sujit Sharma pointed out that the excessive number of vehicles during peak hours exacerbates the situation, affecting both transport services and local businesses.
During a public meeting last October, FRA assets manager Amit Deo acknowledged that the project is still in the discussion phase among management. The bypass road is a complex project estimated to cost around $30 million, a figure revealed after the new Coalition Government took office. Mr. Deo indicated that while the project is essential, it requires time and careful planning to come to fruition.
As discussions between the town council and the Government continue, stakeholders remain hopeful for positive developments. Given the increasing number of vehicles and ongoing growth in Labasa, the bypass road is viewed as crucial for reducing traffic congestion and facilitating future expansion.
It’s encouraging to see the government and local stakeholders engaged in discussions aimed at addressing the pressing transportation issues in Labasa. With collective efforts and a shared vision for better infrastructure, the community can look forward to improved road access and enhanced services in the near future.
