Labasa Bypass: Are We Finally Getting a Traffic Solution?

The Labasa bypass road project remains a top priority for the government, as Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has emphasized the immediate need to initiate construction. During his discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Mr. Rabuka highlighted the necessity of creating dual access roads to and from Labasa Town to alleviate the pressures of traffic congestion currently caused by the existing one-way road system.

He recalled a specific incident in which a fire in Labasa Town resulted in delayed response times due to limited road access, underscoring the urgency for improvement. To address this, Mr. Rabuka proposed transforming the old rail bridge adjacent to the main bridge into a two-way road.

However, the project’s slow progress has led to disappointment among various stakeholders. Public transport operators have expressed their frustrations over traffic snarls and the adverse effects on their services. Sujit Sharma, the general secretary of the Labasa Town Taxi Association, stressed that the overwhelming number of vehicles during rush hours exacerbates congestion and negatively impacts both taxi operations and local businesses.

At a public meeting in October, FRA assets manager Amit Deo acknowledged that the project is still in the discussion phase. He noted the complex nature of the undertaking, which has been estimated to cost around $30 million following the new Coalition Government’s assessment. Mr. Deo stated that while the project is essential, it will require significant time and resources to come to fruition.

Looking ahead, stakeholders are hopeful for real progress as conversations between the town council and the government continue. With vehicle numbers steadily increasing, the bypass road is seen as crucial not only for reducing congestion but also for supporting the ongoing growth and development within Labasa.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to addressing infrastructure challenges, ultimately aiming for improved transportation for residents and businesses alike. As the community remains engaged in discussions, there’s optimism that the bypass will soon become a reality, paving the way for enhanced mobility and economic opportunities in the region.
