The Labasa bypass road project is a top priority, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasizing the need to initiate work on the infrastructure. During recent discussions with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), he asserted the importance of establishing dual road access to Labasa Town to address traffic flow issues.
Rabuka cited a past incident where fire crews struggled due to restricted road access, highlighting the urgency of the situation. He proposed transforming the old rail bridge adjacent to the main bridge into a two-way road network, which would significantly enhance connectivity.
Stakeholders have expressed concerns regarding the delay in the project, particularly public transport providers who are frustrated by ongoing traffic congestion that affects their services. Sujit Sharma, the general secretary of the Labasa Town Taxi Association, emphasized the detrimental impact of peak traffic on taxi operations and local businesses.
At a recent public consultation, FRA assets manager Amit Deo reported that the project is currently in the management discussion phase. The estimated cost for the bypass is around $30 million, a figure revealed after the new Coalition Government took office. Deo acknowledged that the project is complex and will take time to develop.
As discussions progress between the town council and the Government, stakeholders remain optimistic about eventual outcomes. With vehicle numbers on the rise and continued developments in Labasa, the bypass road is considered essential for reducing congestion and promoting community growth.
This project has the potential to improve not only traffic flow but also the safety and efficiency of transport services in Labasa, leading to economic benefits for local businesses and residents.
