The Labasa bypass road project is currently a top priority, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka emphasizing the need for work to begin promptly. During a meeting with the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), he highlighted the pressing need for dual road access to facilitate traffic flow in and out of Labasa Town. The Prime Minister pointed out that the current one-way road system is inadequate, recalling an incident when a fire crew faced delays due to restricted road access. He proposed transforming the old rail bridge next to the main bridge into a two-way road to enhance connectivity.

Discontent regarding the delay of the bypass project has been expressed by various stakeholders. Public transport providers have reported increased traffic congestion, affecting their services significantly. Sujit Sharma, the general secretary of the Labasa Town Taxi Association, emphasized that the heavy vehicle presence during peak hours exacerbates the situation, adversely impacting taxi operations and local businesses.

In a recent public consultation, FRA assets manager Amit Deo confirmed that the project is still in the management discussion phase, citing its complexity and a projected cost of approximately $30 million following the Coalition Government’s initiation. He explained that progress would take time and that the project involves numerous challenges.
