Repairs have begun on the Waidamudamu wooden bridge located along Korotari Road in Labasa, following a fire incident earlier this month that was determined to be deliberate. The bridge suffered significant damage, prompting the removal of the affected deck. Currently, the bridge is closed to all traffic, which is having a considerable impact on local residents and road users in the vicinity.
The Fiji Roads Authority has announced that work is underway for a complete deck replacement. In the meantime, the public is advised to seek alternative routes. Recommended detours include Nakorotari Crossing toward Waikisi and Siberia Road, as well as Vunimoli Feeder Road toward Waidamudamu Road, until the repairs are finalized and the bridge can be safely reopened.
Additionally, police spokesperson Ana Naisoro has informed FBC News that authorities are awaiting a fire report to further their investigation into the incident. This ongoing probe highlights the commitment of law enforcement to understand the circumstances surrounding the fire and to ensure community safety.
The situation, although challenging for local residents due to the bridge closure, illustrates the authorities’ swift response to infrastructure damage and their efforts to restore normalcy in transport as quickly as possible. The positive step toward repair signifies hope for the community as they anticipate the bridge’s reopening and a return to their usual travel routes.
