Fiji Airports has confirmed that it does not engage directly with landowners without the necessary approvals in place, following inquiries regarding consultations with the landowners of Labasa Airport about its planned extension. The organization stated that it is mandated to seek permission from the iTaukei Land Trust Board and the Department of Lands before meeting with landowners.
In addressing the importance of communication, Fiji Airports emphasized its adherence to established procedures when interacting with landowners. The organization works alongside key government agencies to ensure that landowners are fully informed about ongoing discussions and engagements. They reiterated their commitment to open dialogue, stressing that all concerns raised by landowners are taken seriously and are addressed promptly and respectfully.
This clarification comes in the wake of concerns voiced by clan members of Nabukarabe in Nakama Village, who expressed their desire to be included in discussions regarding further developments at Labasa Airport. The clan has asserted that they have not been consulted by Fiji Airports, the Ministry of Lands, or the iTaukei Lands Trust Board concerning the airport extension. In response, Fiji Airports pointed to documented meetings with landowners, highlighting that these discussions have been conducted positively.
The Mataqali Nabukarabe owns a significant portion of land in Labasa, including 3,890 acres, with around 1,100 acres leased under the management of the iTaukei Land Trust Board. The ongoing project to extend the Labasa Airport represents an investment of $8.57 million, aimed at fortifying the existing runway and replacing the outdated Adi Laisa Terminal, which was originally constructed in 1973. The new terminal will feature modern amenities, including a baggage carousel and air-conditioning, across a 1,000 square meter space.
Runway strengthening is scheduled from February 16 to March 27, during which time the airport will be closed. This ambitious project underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing aviation infrastructure and improving the travel experience, which is expected to benefit both local communities and the broader region.
