Fiji Airports is currently navigating significant financial challenges as it strives to improve its infrastructure across the country’s government-owned airports, particularly Labasa Airport. According to CEO Mesake Nawari, Nadi International Airport remains the only profitable airport managed by Fiji Airports, which complicates the funding required for an ambitious 25-year infrastructure development program aimed at enhancing the remaining 14 government-owned facilities.
Nawari’s comments highlight the absence of “free capital,” which is essential for financing necessary updates. His remarks come in response to public inquiries about the delays in the development of Labasa Airport, prompting attention to the financial strains on the organization.
In a positive turn of events, the new temporary terminal at Labasa Airport opened a week ahead of its scheduled completion. This facility, which accommodates 70 passengers, was completed with extended working hours to expedite the project ahead of its planned timeframe. Labasa Airport receives an average of 200 passengers daily, leading to anticipated congestion during peak travel times. To alleviate this issue, additional temporary structures have been erected to manage passenger overflow until more permanent solutions are in place.
The temporary terminal is part of an $8 million initiative that will facilitate improvements at the airport, paving the way for a more substantial permanent terminal planned for the near future. This new facility is expected to house 138 seats and include a distinct arrivals hall, providing a significantly enhanced experience for travelers. Construction for this permanent terminal is slated to begin soon and is projected to take around 18 months to complete.
