FIJI Airports CEO Mesake Nawari has confirmed that the temporary closure of Labasa Airport, scheduled from February 16 to March 27, will proceed as planned. This decision comes in light of necessary runway pavement strengthening works that aim to enhance the airport’s safety, structural integrity, and compliance with international aviation standards.
Nawari’s remarks follow a previous statement from iTaukei Lands Trust Board CEO Solomoni Nata, which suggested that the project could not advance without a planning exercise by the Asian Development Bank. However, Nawari emphasized that the closure is essential for executing critical runway upgrades.
During the airport’s closure, flights to the Northern Division will be redirected to Savusavu Airport. To alleviate potential disruptions, Fiji Airways (Fiji Link) will provide 44 additional flights to and from Savusavu Airport, while Northern Air will operate two daily flights throughout the closure period. Regular bus services will continue as usual, and passengers with hotel reservations in the Northern Division can expect scheduled minibus pickups. Detailed timetables and route information will be disseminated through Fiji Airports’ official channels and social media platforms.
Nawari addressed the significance of the closure, stating that it is crucial for resolving current structural issues and ensuring ongoing adherence to international aviation safety regulations. He expressed appreciation for the public’s patience and cooperation as Fiji Airports undertakes these vital upgrades.
The runway strengthening project is part of the Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu, known as the Na Vualiku Project, and is supported by funding from the World Bank. Additionally, Nawari highlighted that three significant projects are in progress at Labasa Airport: the construction of a new terminal building, the upcoming runway strengthening works, and various feasibility studies under the Na Vualiku Project to explore long-term development options for Labasa Airport and the broader Vanua Levu region, which may include the potential establishment of a new airport.
This investment in infrastructure exemplifies a commitment to improving air connectivity and safety in the region, paving the way for ongoing tourism and economic growth in Vanua Levu.
