Fiji Airports officially announced the commencement of runway strengthening works at Labasa Airport, beginning today. This significant upgrade aims to enhance safety and improve the overall travel experience for passengers and stakeholders alike.

The project will necessitate the temporary closure of Labasa Airport from Monday, February 16, 2026, until March 27, 2026. Fiji Airports has advised travelers to plan alternative arrangements during this period to minimize disruptions to their travel plans.

In an official statement, Fiji Airports emphasized the importance of this upgrade, stating, “Construction has officially commenced as we begin this important upgrade to enhance safety and improve the overall travel experience for our passengers and stakeholders.” The agency expressed its gratitude and requested that all travelers make the necessary arrangements during the closure.

The strengthening of the runway is expected to deliver a safer and more robust infrastructure for the North, ultimately enhancing air connectivity and service reliability in the region, often referred to as the Friendly North.

Ahead of the construction, Fiji Airports demonstrated respect for the local community by presenting a sevusevu to the villagers of Nakama Village, particularly acknowledging members of the mataqali Nabukarabe. This gesture illustrates Fiji Airports’ commitment to maintaining strong relationships with the traditional landowners in the area.

Accompanied by contractors Flametree Fiji, the Fiji Airports team visited Nakama Village to inform the community about the project timeline and the work’s commencement. “We remain committed to keeping all stakeholders informed through open dialogue, respect, and partnership,” Fiji Airports stated.

The airport authority thanked the community for their patience and understanding as they work towards delivering a stronger, safer runway, enhancing the overall travel experience in the region. They have pledged to provide updates on the progress of the works as construction continues.
