Fiji Airports has announced the temporary closure of Labasa Airport from February 16 to March 27, 2024, for essential runway pavement strengthening works. This initiative is part of an effort to enhance the airport’s long-term safety, structural integrity, and adherence to international aviation standards.

To reduce inconvenience for travelers, Fiji Link is set to operate 44 additional flights to and from Savusavu Airport, while Northern Air will provide two daily flights along the Savusavu route. Normal bus services will remain operational, and passengers with confirmed hotel bookings in the Northern Division will receive minibus pick-up schedules to ensure smooth transport during the airport’s closure.

Timetables and route information will be made available through official channels and social media platforms to keep travelers informed.

CEO Mesake Nawari emphasized the necessity of the closure due to the nature of the renovation works, which are crucial for addressing existing structural issues and maintaining compliance with safety standards. He reassured the public that air connectivity for Vanua Levu will be preserved throughout the closure.

The upgrade project is funded by the Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu (Na Vualiku Project), with backing from the World Bank. Fiji Airports noted that these improvements are part of its broader long-term infrastructure program and reflect its vision of becoming a world-class aviation hub. Such investments are aimed at securing the future of the Northern Division and minimizing the risk of unplanned disruptions.

This ongoing development illustrates Fiji’s commitment to enhancing its aviation services, ensuring a safer and more reliable experience for travelers and the local community.
