KPMG Fiji is actively involved in the ‘Wear It Black’ campaign, aimed at raising awareness about gender-based violence and fostering community support for safer environments. Lisa Apted, the firm’s manager partner, noted that every Thursday, staff members don black clothing as a sign of solidarity for victims and survivors of violence.
Dressing in black may appear to be a minor act, but according to Ms. Apted, it has effectively united teams across the Pacific and Australia. Currently, over 16 KPMG offices have joined this initiative, expanding from its roots in Fiji. Ms. Apted expressed pride in the collective passion for creating positive community change, highlighting that KPMG is making significant charitable donations to three women’s shelters located in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Australia.
KPMG Enterprise managing partner Naomi Mitchell emphasized the urgency of addressing gender-based violence, which affects one in three women globally. Mitchell reiterated the firm’s commitment to combat this pervasive issue, stating, “As a firm, we take a strong stance and recognize there’s no place for gender-based violence.”
Additionally, KPMG International announced their backing of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which runs from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day). This year’s theme, ‘Safe, Everywhere, Always,’ encourages teams to continue wearing black on Thursdays to promote conversations regarding violence prevention.
This initiative represents not just a call to action for immediate support but also a significant step towards community awareness and change. By participating in this campaign, KPMG Fiji is setting an example for others, proving that unified efforts can have a significant impact in the fight against gender-based violence.
