Residents of the Hawaii Settlement in Korovuto, Fiji, have expressed growing frustration over persistent water service disruptions that have gone unaddressed for more than a month. The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has yet to respond to the community’s concerns regarding their inadequate water infrastructure.

At the heart of the issue is the settlement’s existing water system, which utilizes a single water meter for all 25 households. This meter is positioned at the entrance of the community, with over a kilometer of exposed water pipes running above ground to reach each home. Residents have reported that these exposed pipes are frequently damaged, primarily due to heavy vehicles passing through the area, as well as from individuals burning rubbish nearby.

Abhay Nand, a local resident, shared that the community has been advocating for improvements to their water setup since last year. They have requested the installation of individual water meters for each household or the placement of the water pipes underground to prevent further damage. However, WAF has not responded to any of these requests.

Despite repeated attempts by FBC News to obtain information from WAF over the past month, no feedback has been provided. Nand emphasized that residents are enduring not only frequent water disruptions but also elevated water bills due to ongoing leakages from the damaged pipes.

In light of these challenges, the community is urging the Water Authority of Fiji to take immediate action to address their concerns and improve the water supply conditions. Residents are hopeful that the authority will respond soon and work towards a viable solution for the ongoing water issues.
