The Korovou Chamber of Commerce in Tailevu is calling for the management of their town to be returned to the local community, claiming that it has been long neglected under the oversight of the Nausori Town Council. Rajendra Prasad, the President of the newly established chamber, highlights that the town’s affairs were historically managed by the Korovou Rural Local Authority. However, since the transfer of control to Nausori, the town’s development has reportedly been stifled.

Prasad argues that the residents of Korovou are best positioned to manage their own town, stating that Nausori cannot dedicate the necessary attention to their needs. He suggests that local governance could foster growth and development, making Korovou comparable to other thriving towns across the nation. The chamber is advocating for a reversal of the current management arrangement and pushing for essential government services to be provisioned locally, given the prohibitive costs for residents traveling to Nausori for these services.

As a bustling transit point for travelers heading to the Northern Division and Lomaiviti, Korovou’s strategic importance underlines the need for capable local governance. This movement aligns with regional trends across Fiji, where communities are increasingly pressing for self-management to spur local economic growth, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

The initiative by the Korovou Chamber of Commerce represents a growing desire within regions to reclaim control over local affairs as a means to revitalize and empower their communities. Such a shift could potentially address long-standing developmental challenges and open up new economic opportunities for Korovou, thereby enhancing living standards for its residents.
