The Koroipita community in Lautoka is experiencing a significant uplift in both livelihood and infrastructure, thanks to a collaboration between TravelOnline, a prominent Australian Tour Operator, and its local ground operator, Rosie Holidays. This partnership has resulted in substantial benefits for the residents of Koroipita, a township that comprises over 300 homes and 1,330 individuals, primarily from low-income families.
TravelOnline’s managing director, Glenn Checkley, expressed their commitment to assist the Fijian economy and communities recovering from the impact of COVID-19. One of the projects they introduced is the Koroipita sewing boutique, which received support through the donation of new sewing machines and training from the Family Advancement team and Sew Aid. As a result, four women from the community have secured full-time employment, creating beautiful hand-made bags that reflect the hard work and passion of the Koroipita residents.
Paul Forrest, general manager of Model Towns, emphasized the value of this initiative, which not only provides jobs for these families but also opens pathways for young people to acquire skills that could lead to broader opportunities within the garment industry or even entrepreneurship. Tony Whitton, managing director of Rosie Holidays, acknowledged the importance of the tourism sector in enhancing the overall social and economic well-being of the Fijian people.
TravelOnline has a longstanding commitment to Koroipita, having helped build homes, playgrounds, and community facilities over the past 20 years. In 2019, they sent more than 27,000 passengers to Fiji, who participated in outreach programs through Rosie Holidays. Following the reopening of borders in 2023, TravelOnline awarded a long-term contract to produce cotton beach bags, which feature unique tropical designs and share Koroipita’s story with visitors. This project has generated over $250,000 in sales revenue, further solidifying economic empowerment within the community.
In recognition of TravelOnline’s contributions, a street has been named in their honor, showcasing the community’s gratitude and marking a step toward stronger local ties that promote resilience and growth.
This collaboration not only highlights the positive impact of tourism on local economies but also presents a compelling narrative of community development and empowerment. The combined efforts of global and local partners reflect a hopeful future for Koroipita, suggesting that sustainable initiatives can create lasting improvements in the lives of everyday Fijians.
