Paul Forrest, the general manager of MODEL Towns Charitable Trust, has brought attention to the pressing social issues that families in the Koroipita community are facing, emphasizing the need for greater male responsibility and stability within households. Koroipita, situated close to Lautoka City, is home to a substantial number of vulnerable families, including 57 single-parent households. Many residents have sought refuge at MODEL Town, escaping challenging pasts, including situations of domestic violence.
Mr. Forrest pointed out the troubling reality that some fathers have abandoned their families to pursue their individual desires, highlighting the urgent need for a shift in attitudes and behaviors among men. He acknowledged the significance of various social movements but stressed that focusing on male responsibility should be a key aspect of enhancing family welfare.
“There’s a lot of talk about women’s empowerment, which is certainly important. However, we believe it is equally vital to educate men on their domestic responsibilities. Men should aspire to provide for their families and serve as positive role models for their wives and children,” he stated. Mr. Forrest believes that fostering a stronger sense of responsibility among men could create a more supportive environment for mothers, enabling them to devote more time and attention to nurturing children with strong values and morals.
This call for action serves as a reminder of the importance of community support in addressing societal issues, and the potential for positive change when both men and women are empowered in their respective roles. As communities work together to confront these challenges, there is hope for improved family stability and overall well-being.
