The Wallabies are energized with the return of Marika Koroibete, one of their key leaders, to the Test lineup. There were rumors that the Fijian winger would retire after the World Cup, but these were put to rest when coach Joe Schmidt included him in the squad for the opening Rugby Championship matches against the Springboks, allowing Koroibete to reclaim the number 11 jersey he has made synonymous with his name.
Koroibete’s on-field contributions are evident, but his influence off the field is equally significant, as highlighted by teammate Nic White, who remarked on Koroibete’s exceptional demeanor. “He’s special mate. He’s one of a kind Marika,” White told rugby.com.au. “He embodies the ‘stop or go’ mentality; once he steps onto the field, it’s all about giving his all. His capability to push through and deliver in every situation, be it kick chasing or making key tackles, is remarkable. He exemplifies what it means to put in effort consistently.”
White noted Koroibete’s quiet but commanding presence, stating that he communicates through his actions, and when he does speak, it commands attention, positioning him as a natural leader within the team.
Schmidt recognized this leadership quality when he selected Koroibete as the sole overseas player for the upcoming Tests. “Marika brings a positive energy to the team environment,” Schmidt shared last week. “His understanding of the game allows him to engage at critical moments, and he displays relentless work ethic on the pitch. Having coached against him, I know he’s a formidable opponent.”
Following a challenging aerial performance in a previous match, Schmidt is looking forward to Koroibete’s impact on their gameplay. “I felt we struggled in the aerial contest last week; they kicked seven contestable balls and reclaimed four, while we didn’t secure any of ours. Winning that aerial battle is crucial for gaining possession,” he explained.
The Wallabies will face off against the Springboks in Perth tonight at 7:45 PM.
