Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has raised alarm bells regarding drug-related activities on Koro Island, vowing a rigorous crackdown against those involved in the cultivation and trafficking of drugs. During his address at the Koro High School Pass-out Parade, he urged community members, particularly students, to uphold discipline and actively work to shield the island from illegal activities.
“The Fiji Police Force will not rest until there is no marijuana on this island,” Tudravu asserted, pledging to bring offenders to justice. His emphasis on self-discipline resonates with recent concerns surrounding students’ involvement in drug-related activities within Koro High School, a trend that has alarmed local authorities and the community.
Tevita Vunileba, chairman of the Koro Island Crime Prevention Committee, noted that the school has previously dealt with incidents of marijuana possession and distribution among students. Efforts have included counseling, warnings, and even expulsions for repeat offenders, who pose a risk to younger children in the community. The positive impact of the cadet training program, which began at the school earlier this year, has been acknowledged as a significant factor in instilling discipline among the students and combating these challenges.
Recent reports indicate that community and law enforcement collaboration is crucial in addressing these serious issues. Tudravu’s recognition of the students’ role in upholding discipline ties directly to Vunileba’s calls for community vigilance against drug abuse. As Koro High School continues to adapt and respond to these challenges, there remains hope for a safer environment for both students and the entire island community.
The ongoing struggle against drug influence underscores a critical need for collaborative strategies and communal support, aiming for a healthier and more secure future for the youth of Koro Island.
